The journey to Lakoma Island off the mainland of Malawi, Africa, had been tough. Hours on the open water had turned us green and our stomachs upside down.
After a good night’s sleep on solid ground, we awoke to high winds and the sound of waves beating the beach.
Our accommodations were adequate. The availability of running water on a remote island came as a surprise. Having a warm shower was pure delight. We were void a few of the luxuries of home, but our challenges weren’t close to the challenges contestants face on the hit TV show “Survivor.”

We had done very well in the tournament. The little league baseball team had endured the hot Oklahoma sun, and the coach was ready to celebrate with his up-and-coming major leaguers.
Everyone was hungry and tired. Feeding the crew in short order was a priority. Having multiple food options would keep everyone happy. What better place to build camaraderie than the local buffet?

For the last year, many dedicated people at the Baptist Messenger have poured their lives into developing and providing Oklahoma Baptists with a more relevant and engaging publication. Next week, their efforts will be unveiled.

With a new legislative session under way, many eyes are on the State Capitol. Republicans control the Oklahoma State House of Representatives, power is divided evenly at the Oklahoma State Senate and the Democrats have control of the Governor and Lieutenant Governor’s offices.
Things appear to be kind and cordial from the get-go. Will it last? The question on everyone’s mind is, as the cable guy would put it, “Can they get ‘er done?” Can this Legislature work together to craft legislation that makes Oklahoma a better place?

Feb. 7 marks my one year anniversary as the Executive Editor of the Baptist Messenger. This past year has been the most challenging and exciting year of my career.
The BGCO Board of Directors appointed me as the Executive Editor, following a series of key recommendations to the board by the Communications Task Force. The purpose of the task force was to look for ways to maximize the communications efforts of the BGCO.The task force gained valuable information from more than 2,000 church members. We learned a lot!

An elderly man lay in his bed dying of cancer. The doctors had done all they could to make him comfortable, but the cure would not come. The cancer would win. Upset that the end was near, the man appealed to God asking Him why He did nothing to end cancer. God replied, “I sent the answer for the cure many years ago with a little girl who would someday become a medical researcher. Unfortunately, her parents chose to abort her before she had a fighting chance.”

We were forewarned. The weather warnings were clear. “An ice storm is coming.” “Prepare for the worst.” “Everyday activity will come to a standstill.” This time, the climate predictor’s prophecies came true. The Central Plains were covered in layers and layers of ice. Time stood still, as did everything else.

Perhaps Paul had New Year’s resolutions in mind when he said, “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God (1 Corinthians 10:31).” I don’t know about you, but I believe this is one of the most challenging verses in Scripture.
